Information Technology
The Information Technology Department provides the City with a high-speed fiber network for data recording, email, redundant high-speed Internet access, citizen web site, accessible electronic documents, financial applications, storage considerations, consolidations, and enhanced databases. The department seeks to provide increasingly improved efficiency, accountability, and accessibility to all information relating to city government, both for City employees, as well as to its residents.
A chief task of the department is to manage IT investments in the City’s communications and computing infrastructure (network hardware, PCs, and operating systems). In addition, IT manages the City’s data applications and security, software applications and implementation, and computer-related training.
The department takes the lead role -- working with the Communications Department – in shifting the city’s telephone system to Voice Over Internet Protocol or VOIP. It also must take a primary role in the Mayor’s Somerstat initiative, which seeks to gather and analyze departmental data in order to better target resources and programs.
